The chip crisis has hit Canon and its toners, and will supply them without chips

Author: CANON

The crisis in chip production is also affecting printer manufacturers. Needless to say, printer and multifunction manufacturers are struggling with non-genuine cartridge / toner manufacturers. Canon is famous for cases where, for example, it was not possible to print in black and white when some of the colors ran out, or when the multifunction could not be scanned if the printing part had an empty cartridge.

Canon print cartridges (as well as other manufacturers) typically contain a chip today. It not only can report the cartridge level, but also provides cartridge authentication, without which today’s printers usually refuse to print. But there are few chips and such Canon now had to proceed with the announcementthat will produce chipless toners and its the German branch informshow to bypass that printer protection. Specifically, these are the imageRUNNER products, which are Canon’s high-volume office printers. In this case, the procedure is completely trivial. The printer reports an error when toner is installed without a chip. The user then only confirms that he agrees with the use of the content or completely ignores the dialog (“I Agree”, “Close” or “OK” options).

Canon only adds that in such a situation the printer will not be able to report the toner level, resp. the need to replace it with a new one (which could theoretically be a problem in situations where the printer is operated as a service with a continuous supply of service provider charges). Needless to say, this has zero effect on print quality.
