As the war in Ukraine, which was triggered by Russia’s invasion, is about to turn one year old, China is in the spotlight, along with the warring parties, Russia and Ukraine, and its key interests, the United States and the European Union.
Without China’s support, the Russian invasion of Ukraine would not have been possible and would not have lasted a year.
For this reason, the United States has been constantly throwing checks to prevent China from supporting Russia economically and militarily since the start of the war in Ukraine.
As if due to this influence, China’s military support for Russia has not been confirmed due to strong preemptive warnings from the United States.
However, China is strengthening its economic ties by buying Russia’s natural resources while boycotting the economic sanctions of the West led by the United States.
A war of nerves between US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln and Wang Yi, a member of the Central Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party, who met at the Munich Security Conference on the 18th (local time) when the two countries were fighting over the issue of (reconnaissance) balloons shot down by the United States from China. should be understood in this context.
At the meeting that day, Minister Blincoln warned of close contact with China, citing the impact and consequences that would occur if China provided material support to Russia or supported systematic sanctions evasion.
Regarding this, Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo, said in a speech at the Munich Security Conference that “China is on the side of peace and dialogue,” targeting the United States.
However, it is doubtful how persuasive the Western world will be to such remarks of China’s ‘one-top’ diplomat, who defended Russia’s position even before the war, saying that Russia’s security concerns should be resolved.
In the midst of this, Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, stressing that “China has always been on the side of peace and dialogue on the Ukrainian issue, adhering to reconciliation and promoting negotiations.” expressed a desire to do so.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on the 20th, Commissioner Wang said at a meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleva at the Munich Security Conference on the 18th, “We do not want the Ukrainian crisis to prolong and escalate.”
“China has always been on the side of peace and dialogue on the Ukraine issue, adhering to reconciliation and promoting negotiations,” he said.
In response, Minister Kuleba said, “No country wants to realize peace more than Ukraine. I look forward to performing,” he replied.
