The Chinese strain of the virus no longer dominates in Moselle

Weakened by the explosion of new variants on its soil, the French department could see access to Germany restricted as of Monday. An unthinkable solution for the Luxembourg Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The situation therefore does not seem identical, on the Moselle side, to that encountered in the Grand Duchy. Just last week the last official bulletin from the National Health Laboratory announced the British variant at the top of the new infections seen in the country.

The new report on Luxembourg has not yet published, but there is no doubt that Paulette Lenert should tackle the subject of variants soon. The Minister of Health has indeed planned to hold a press conference on Thursday morning. Just as Luxembourg will open its third and fourth vaccination centers (Ettelbrück and Mondorf).

Faced with the worrying multiplication of cases, the Moselle has led in recent days a double effort: both on screening and vaccination (in particular thanks to the granting of 30,000 additional doses provided after the visit of the Minister of Health to Metz ). Thus, in one week, 66,000 covid tests were performed. Enough to boost the incidence rate, which rose in one week from 270 to 315 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the department.

Seven supplementary vaccination centers

But the strategy of “testing more to isolate quickly” should help stop the progression of the infection. Already, the positivity rate of the last screenings has dropped somewhat, 4.9%. A still high level of course (it is only 2% in the Grand Duchy), but lower than the French national average (6.4%).

It now remains to ensure the protection of elderly and fragile populations more actively. This is the trail followed for the days to come. The Moselle should thus have 17 communal vaccination centers active before the weekend, against ten hospitals at the start of the week. Metz thus opened two additional sites Monday, Freyming-Merlebach and Dieuze one each Tuesday, this Wednesday it was the turn of Thionville and Montigny-les-Metz and Bitche. A serious reinforcement for the protection of seniors, a category of the population currently a priority.

In Metz, an ephemeral municipal center is planned for this weekend. It is a question of a vaccination capacity oscillating between 1,000 to 2,000 additional people.
