A simple white paper held like a banner by hundreds of Tsinghua University students. White, the color of death in China, has become the symbol of the revolt against “Covid zero”. This vast campus north of Beijing houses more than 50,000 students, considered the regime’s elite. But it only took a few brave people on Sunday to turn Tsinghua into a bastion of revolt. “We shouted ‘freedom will triumph, no PCR tests, no imprisonments'”says a student.
A stone’s throw away, anger is also brewing at the University of Beida, famous for being the origin of the student movement of 1989, bloodily repressed by the communist regime.
