“Prepare for war!” – read this in a report published by the 80th Group of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in connection with the visit of high-ranking US officials to economically self-sufficient Taiwan.
The Chinese military’s war message over a possible US visit to Taiwan generated more than 300,000 signs of approval in just 12 hours, boosting “high morale among Chinese soldiers,” according to the Global Times, on Chinese social network Weibo.
News of China’s preparations for war comes after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi angered the Chinese government by suggesting the US could potentially recognize Taiwan as an independent sovereign state.
However, politicians are concerned that now that news of the hypothetical visit has spread, if the US does not send Pelosi to Taiwan, it will appear that the American nation has cowered in the face of Chinese might.
At the same time, since July 25, Taiwan has been holding its annual military preparations for a Chinese invasion, more commonly known as the “Han Kuang Exercises” in military circles.
