Sanctions imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine made it difficult to access imported parts that even domestically produced vehicles were equipped with. Russian companies find safety in China, which has not clearly condemned the invasion of Ukraine and still maintains friendly relations with the attacker.

However, the Chinese government is concerned about the welfare of its companies and has recommended not doing business with Russian companies that are subject to US sanctions. The Chinese fear that these companies could face retaliatory sanctions from the United States.

The engines supplied by “Weichai Power” were equipped with the “KamAZ K4” truck tractor, which ran on liquefied natural gas. In addition, these engines were installed on dump trucks and buses produced at the “KamAZ” plant.

So far the engines supplied by the Chinese will be sufficient for the production of the “KamAZ” models until the end of 2022. From 2023, however, “KamAZ” plans to introduce into production the modification of the six-cylinder “P6” engine developed in collaboration with the German “Daimler Truck”, rebuilt for natural gas operation. After 12 years of cooperation, “Daimler Truck” stopped all cooperation with “KamAZ” in February of this year.

The European Union (EU) imposed sanctions against “KamAZ” as early as February, which prevents the sale of vehicles of this brand in EU countries, as well as the cooperation of this Russian carmaker with EU companies. On the other hand, at the beginning of June, the US also introduced sanctions against “KamAZ”, so “KamAZ” has no possibility of receiving supplies from any Western company.
