The China Changchun Film Festival contributes to the market upturn

CHANGCHUN, China, Aug. 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Wang Junkai, the lead singer of the hugely popular Chinese music band TFBOYS, was named the image ambassador of the 19th China Changchun Film Festival on Monday. The topic quickly gained widespread attention on Weibo, China’s leading social media platform.

A leading Chinese film festival aimed at boosting the Chinese film market opened on Wednesday evening in Changchun, the capital of northeast China’s Jilin province and the cradle of the Chinese film industry.

Under the motto “New era, new cradle, new strength” and with the aim of “meeting in the city of film to discuss the future of cinema”, the festival consists of six major sections, including the opening and closing ceremonies, a film awards ceremony and much more.

The China Changchun Film Festival has been held every two years since its inception in 1992, but has been held annually since 2021.

Summer is one of the highest-grossing cinema seasons in China. On Sunday, box office revenue in China for summer 2024 reached 11.1 billion yuan (about 1.56 billion US dollars). The Chinese comedy “Successor” topped the sales list.

The blockbuster “Successor” has grossed about 3.2 billion yuan at the box office since its release on July 16, accounting for nearly 29 percent of the summer’s total box office. “Successor” was also nominated for the prestigious “Golden Deer Award.”

This film was co-produced by Changchun Film Studio, one of China’s most prestigious film companies. The film featured elements from Changchun, such as the legendary Hongqi limousines, which left a lasting impression on many viewers in China.

In recent years, Changchun has vigorously promoted the high-quality development of its film industry to support the production of films such as “Successor”. The Golden Hall of Changchun International Film Capital is a venue specially designed for the opening and closing ceremonies of this year’s festival.

During the 18th China Changchun Film Festival last year, the Changchun municipal government introduced several measures to promote the high-quality development of the film and television industry and offered financial support of up to 35 million yuan for a single film.

In addition to being known as the “City of Film” and hosting the ongoing film festival, Changchun has also earned other notable titles such as “City of Automobiles”. The city is vigorously restructuring its industries by leveraging its strengths and addressing its weaknesses to vigorously support the comprehensive revitalization of Northeast China and make new breakthroughs.
