In 2019, the Children’s Clinical University Hospital (BKUS) was profitable. Last year, the missing staff in the hospital accounted for almost 12%, BKUS was informed in a statement to the media.

In 2019, the budget of BKUS was 54 million euros; The profit for the reporting year was 7505 euros. 96% of the hospital’s budget is public funding.

Last year, the largest expenditure items were remuneration – 32 million euros. 11 million euros have been spent on medicines and medical supplies. Last year, the total infrastructure maintenance expenses and investments for the operation of the hospital amounted to six million euros.

“Limited resources are the biggest challenge for hospital management. Today, when many successes in medicine are associated with the development of medical technology, it is necessary to invest in the renewal and improvement of the technology park every year. For the next three years, the Children’s Hospital needs an additional 7.5 million euros to renovate the medical technology park and provide the new technologies necessary for treatment, ”Valts Ābols, Chairman of the Board of BKUS, told the media.

With the involvement of 1884 Children’s Hospital staff, medical care was provided to 2014,475 outpatients and 15,876 inpatients in 2019, and 63,598 children received acute and emergency medical care. The Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in Latvia that provides multidisciplinary and tertiary level medical assistance to children, including the provision of assistance in the treatment of the most complex and rare diagnoses.

At the same time, the hospital indicated that in 2019, the shortage of staff accounted for almost 12%. However, BKUS has been able not only to provide continuous assistance and increase the amount of outpatient consultations, but also to implement unique operations and develop new treatment and diagnostic options.

ISO 9001: 2015 certificate has also been received at all stages of the provided services. This will allow you to take the next step in obtaining accreditation in accordance with the DNV Standard for Hospitals.

This year, one of the hospital’s priorities is to improve the motivating work environment and attract the missing staff. Work continues on the improvement of the payroll system, planned development of human resources, developed competencies and skills of employees.

2020 has also introduced adjustments: in the future, the hospital must ensure that the consequences and risks of Covid-19 are reduced and prepared, which means individual patient flows, single wards, individual temperature and air exchange ventilation, and other changes in building functionality. This year, 10.2 million euros have been allocated for the improvement of the infrastructure of the Children’s Hospital, the improvement of the readiness of the hospital and the implementation of the functional requirements in the emergency and outpatient stages. The improvements will affect more than 300,000 visitors a year.
