The average price of used cars on the Czech market in the first half of the year rose by 18 percent to CZK 289,000. The reason was the growing demand due to the lack of new and refurbished cars. The average age of sold cars increased slightly from 9.1 years to 9.5 years. This follows from Cebia’s data.

Most of the used cars sold in the Czech Republic this year were of foreign origin. The share of cars bought new in the Czech Republic fell by six percentage points to 42 percent. 22 percent of cars came from Germany, which is three percentage points more year-on-year. The share of vehicles imported from Austria also increased, which practically caught up with the number of vehicles imported from Italy. The share of cars from Slovakia more than quadrupled year-on-year to 2.2 percent.

The number of used passenger cars imported from abroad to the Czech Republic this year increased by 6.9 percent year-on-year to 89,307 cars. Imports thus returned to values before the coronavirus pandemic.

The speed of sales continued to increase. While cars were sold in an average of 69 days until March, in the first six months they already showed an average sales speed of 61 days. In the same period last year, cars were sold in an average of 96 days, but this period was affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the closure of sales outlets.

The share of sold diesels fell below 50 percent for the first time, i.e. by five percentage points compared to last year. The decline of diesel vehicles is long-term. On the contrary, gasoline cars increased their share from last year’s 42.1 percent to almost 47 percent.

The best-selling model was the Škoda Octavia with a share of 9.4 percent. Year-on-year, the Volkswagen Passat performed worse, its share falling by one percentage point, which led to a move from third to fifth position. The BMW 3 Series and the Hyundai i30 improved slightly. On the contrary, the Ford Mondeo, which used to be a regular in the top ten, fell to 11th place this year.
