The summer and the departures on vacation did not help anything, quite the contrary. Sad record for the Les Acacias refuge, managed by the Chartres SPA, located in Amilly (Eure-et-Loir). The number of dropouts has never been higher.
According to Michelle Métayer, person in charge of the refuge and active member in the animal cause for more than 40 years, the kennel is full. A little over fifty dogs are welcomed there, waiting to be adopted or picked up by their owners.
Of course, there are abandonments but the health crisis is also causing an upsurge in hospitalizations, so we are called to collect the pets of sick people.
Cats adopted during abandoned confinements
On the other side of the Eurelian refuge, the cattery, managed by Sabine Métayer-Vivier, which is saturated. The seventy places in the establishment are all occupied by felines. The same number of cats have been placed in temporary foster homes, pending adoption. The peak in arrivals was observed at the end of July 2021, where about thirty cats were collected in just two days.
“For some, the tragedy of the health crisis was during confinement, for us, the tragedy is now,” laments Sabine Métayer-Vivier.
Mothers and kittens are arriving en masse at the shelter. Most of them are not sterilized and their litters are more numerous.

Financially independent, the S.P.A de Chartres bears the operating costs of the refuge and the veterinary care provided to the animals. She is always looking for donations and foster families for the cats.
