The Charlotte School System Considers Naming a School After Hispanic Culture.

Charlotte, NC.- Due to overcrowding, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System (CMS) will open a new school in August 2023, located on Farm Pond Lane in the east of the city, which is being named and likely to be of a Hispanic community character.

Starting Tuesday, March 21, CMS will be holding a series of virtual meetings (6 in total) where parents and the community will be informed about the importance of having a representative name, as well as the process that will be followed until choosing it.

IDEAS

Although there are already several names in mind, one of the most resonant is that of the activist Sylvia Méndez, whose parents won a federal lawsuit in 1947 for their children to attend a public school in Westminster, California, and that together with the Brown v. . Board of Education, helped end racial segregation in America’s schools.

For her part, Angela Grant, who will be the director of the new school, asked for the support of the Hispanic community, community, historical and cultural groups, to participate and find the name.

DETAILS

The building, which is currently under construction, will have 42 classrooms to receive students from the elementary schools: Charlotte East Language Academy, Albemarle Road, Winterfield and Idlewild. “The parents of the students have already been notified of their reassignment by letter,” Grant said.

There would be between 400 and 450 students who would be in this elementary school, which will have from Pre-K to 4 gradessaid Judith Amaya, CMS East Relief Schools. The campus will add one more grade (5th.) in the 2024-25 school year.

SELECTION

Guidelines for naming the school include: having special meaning to students and citizens of the community (individuals must have been deceased for five years or more); geographic area or community; historical character; and, historical place.

After the first two meetings (March 21 and 22), the next schedule for the process will be: April 10, reduce proposed names to three; April 11, final poll to choose the name of the school; April 17, third session with parents, to share voting results; and, May 9, CMS Board meeting to approve the name.
