The Characteristics of the Archaic Era: A Look at Earth’s Oldest Geological Period

KOMPAS.com – The archaecum era is the oldest era on Earth geologically. At that time, Earth’s conditions were not yet stable, so there was no life.

According to Adi Sudirman in the book Encyclopedia of Complete Indonesian History (2019), the archaean era was the initial period of the Earth’s formation, from the core to the crust.

After the archaecum, there were the paleozoic, mesozoic and neozoic eras. What are the characteristics of the archaic era?

Characteristics of the Archaic period

It is estimated that the archaic era or arcaecum took place around 2,500 million years ago, when the Earth was still a ball of hot gas.

Reporting from the website of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemdikbud), the characteristics of the archaic era are:

There was no life yet. The Earth was still in the form of a hot glowing ball rotating on its axis. Its duration lasted approximately 2,500 million years ago.

The archaic period is the time of the beginning of the Earth. One of the relics of the archaekum period is the kraton rock or continental shield.

The age of these rocks is estimated at 3.8 billion years. This continental shield can be found in several areas, such as the United States, Canada, Venezuela and India.

Initially, in this era there was no life. Because the Earth is still a hot incandescent ball rotating on its axis.

However, as time went by, life began to appear. Marked by the emergence of the first microorganism called Cyanobacteria.

These first microorganisms were capable of photosynthesis, to produce oxygen using methane, ammonia and sulfate.

In general, the oldest era on Earth is divided into four periods, namely:

Periode Eoarkhaean
Periode Paleoarchean
Periode Mesoarchean
Periode Neoarchaean.

Apart from the presence of the first microorganisms, other characteristics of the archaecum era are also characterized by volcanic activity.

The majority of rocks from this era are magmatic in nature, because they came from volcanic activity at that time.

From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the characteristics of the archaic era are:

There is no life yet, because there are no living things that can survive. The earth is still in the form of a hot glowing ball rotating on its axis. Its duration lasted approximately 2,500 million years ago. Oxygen was produced from the first microorganisms. There was volcanic activity. The rocks were magmatic.
