The Changing Landscape of the Taxi Business: Rise of Uber, Government Regulations, and Challenges in Meeting Demand

The taxi business has fundamentally changed. That classic “I have to get home at night somehow” – that has pretty much broken down. There are several reasons for this, says Kai Harth from the Dormagen taxi company Hillmann:

If there is another strike on the railways, then rail replacement transport is good business for the taxi companies. Otherwise, they mainly make their money from medical trips. This means that the taxis drive people who need to go to dialysis or chemotherapy, for example, and the health insurance company then covers the travel costs.

“Uber” is the big competitor

“Uber” is becoming more and more of an issue, especially in large cities like Neuss. The Neuss taxi companies say very clearly:

“We notice that here.”

However, “Uber” has not yet been an issue in the countryside or in smaller towns in the Rhine district of Neuss.

Has taxi travel become too expensive?

First of all, it should be said: The taxi companies do not set the prices themselves. Our district politicians do that here. And they last decided on the current prices just over a year ago (December 1, 2022). The price per kilometer during the day has been increased to 2.60 euros for taxis. However, this is still not enough for taxi companies. They say as justification:

We have a legal obligation to operate. We have to have cars and drivers ready. And that too at times when there is hardly any demand.

Taxi operator Kai Harth from Dormagen says:

If this obligation to operate is still desired by politicians, then the industry must also be supported.

It is not always easy to get a taxi straight away

If I ever need a taxi – depending on where – it’s not always that easy to get one. On the one hand, there is supply and demand. So in times when fewer customers need a taxi, there must be taxis, but of course significantly fewer. And the Dormagen taxi operator Kai Harth also has another problem:

Harth also says:

We are currently experiencing inflation – sadly more and more people are dependent on a second job. And they sometimes decide to drive taxis on the side for an hour at a time.
