The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Opens a Research Center in New York City to Study Immune Cell Function

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative opens a research center in New York City to study how immune cells work. The CZI network of research institutes continues to expand.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative opens a research center in New York City dedicated to the development of new techniques for the detection and treatment of diseases. THE CZ Biohub NY, that’s its name, will work with Columbia, Rockefeller and Yale universities to learn how immune cells detect and attack certain diseases. The goal being, ultimately, to be able to use this knowledge to develop cells that could carry out this work in an extremely targeted manner.

The charity led by Priscilla Chan and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has committed $250 million to the initiative, according to STAT, New York State and New York City invested $10 million each. In a blog post announcing the opening of this CZ Biohub NY, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative says she will begin by focusing on cancers and other diseases that often go undetected until they are sufficiently advanced to make it difficult or impossible to treat. These include “ovarian and pancreatic cancers; neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s; as well as aging and autoimmunity,” says the CZI.

The CZ Biohub NY hopes to unravel the mysteries of how immune cells work, including how they can detect changes in tissues that are among the first indications of disease. Next, researchers hope to be able to create cells capable of detecting these anomalies even earlier to send them directly to diseased areas and offer more effective treatment. These bioengineered immune cells could “detect, signal and repair damage to our cells before it leads to serious diseases,” explains Priscilla Chan.

The CZI network of research institutes continues to expand

This New York hub is the latest research institute in the growing CZI network. It joins three others, in San Francisco, Chicago and Redwood City. All hope to be able to achieve significant innovations in their respective fields within 10 to 15 years. Today, according to STATthe CZ Biohub NY simply needs to find a site on which to land.
