Ferencvaros – Young Boys 2–3, 4–6 sammenlagt:
After scoring eight goals in twelve league games for RBK this spring, 27-year-old Zachariassen was sold on to Ferencvaros on 15 July.
The total budget for the transfer to the Hungarian club was 22 million kroner, and Zachariassen has played hard.
On Tuesday night, when the fate of the Champions League was to be decided, Ferencvaro’s number 16 was out on the left wing against Swiss Young Boys.
This was the second match in the playoffs for the group stage.
And after a narrow 2-3 loss in Bern last week, the home team had a legitimate hope of group play and large millions in the account.
Yellow card
Instead, it was just almost. Ferencvaros turned 0-1 to 2-1, but just before the hour was played, Christian Fassnacht equalized for the guests.
When Zachariassen and co were chasing a third goal, Aissa Laidouni managed to incur two yellow cards in six minutes, and Ferencvaros had to play the last meager half hour with ten men.
It was too tough, and thus Young Boys won 5-4 over two games.
Zachariassen also incurred a yellow card in the settlement. He was taken off after 76 minutes.
Malmö cheers
While Zachariassen and co certainly dipped in the locker room late Tuesday night, there was a completely different atmosphere in the Malmö camp.
The reigning Swedish champions had 2-0 to go against Bulgarian Ludogorets before returning to Razgrad. It just held.
Vejlko Birmancevic’s scoring just before the break ensured that Malmö got away with a 1-2 loss – and thus a 4-3 victory overall.
Twice under Åge Hareide, Malmö managed to make it all the way to a group game.
In 2021, under the leadership of Hareide’s assistant in the Danish era, Jon Dahl Tommason, it will happen again.
