The Champions League rescheduled!

UEFA has decided to postpone the Champions League and the Europa League to July and August, so that the European championships have time to end in June.

While the Covid-19 still wreaks havoc across the Old Continent, European football (already) sees a little more clearly on its end of the season. After working for two weeks on the subject, UEFA convened the 55 federations for a major videoconference meeting, Wednesday noon, to discuss the different scenarios for the future. Here is what the instance of Aleksander Ceferin offers:

  • The Champions League has more or less new dates. As a reminder, UEFA initially moved the finals of its European Cups from 27 and 30 May to 24 and 27 June. Before suspending the C1 and the Europa League outright. These two competitions are now reprogrammed for the months of July and August, as reported by the German media ZDF. The end of the 8th finals, then the quarters, half and the final will run for several weeks.
  • The question of the short extension of players at the end of the contract to June 30 has yet to be discussed with Fifa and FIFPro. The players’ association requests that the exemption be made available to all players, not just those who are still involved in the European cups. FIFPro also warns the two authorities: the players will benefit from Christmas holidays and there is no question of accepting a Boxing Day throughout Europe.
  • Regarding the championships, UEFA is now planning a resumption in early June, which will allow clubs, in agreement with their respective governments, to conduct pre-season preparation in May. This will then allow 5 weeks for the leagues to wedge the remaining days. There are still 9 in the Premier League, 10 in Ligue 1 and 11 in La Liga, which will require clubs to play twice a week. There would therefore be no dates for the national cups, but the Liga and the Premier League would have asked to maintain their respective cups.
  • Finally, the international window for the month of June is officially canceled by UEFA, which will make Noël Le Graët, the president of the FFF, very unhappy who wanted to maintain the two friendly matches of the French team for financial reasons. That of September is also canceled and the calendar of the League of Nations, which was to be spread out in September, October and November 2020, should therefore be revised.
