The draw for the group stage of the Champions League will completely change next season. 900 balls have to be drawn, so the computer will take over the major work, according to reports Sky Sports.
If UEFA had to draw everything manually next season, the draw would take three to four hours! A fully manual draw requires as many as 900 balls. As a result, the European Football Association has decided to have the major work carried out by computers. The clubs are still drawn manually, but then the computer takes over. This selects the eight opponents of the club that emerges from the ball. When Feyenoord is drawn, it will be shown via the computer the eight opponents against whom it will play in the group stage of the Champions League. An English IT company comes up with the software that will take care of the digital part of the draw. There will also be two backup software systems. The new draw will take approximately 35 minutes.
The big changes all have to do with the new format of the billion dollar ball. The Champions League is being drastically changed. Next season there will be 36 participants in the group stage and each club will play eight matches in the group stage against eight different opponents. It is not yet known whether the new format will also be used in the Europa League and Conference League, but it is certainly conceivable that the new draw system will also be used in these tournaments.
