MEXICO CITY (AP) — Diego Barbosa and Jonathan Herrera scored in the second half on Saturday as champion Atlas prevailed 2-0 away to America, which suffered its first loss of the Mexican closing tournament.
Barbosa made a powerful shot that left goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa without a chance in the 70th minute and Herrera finished with a low shot that entered the left post in the 90th.
With the result, the Foxes achieved their second victory in the championship and reach seven points to place themselves on the second rung.
America, who has a pending match, remains with only one point and is 12th.
The Eagles had two clear scoring opportunities in the game, one from Luis Fuentes in the 36th minute and one more from Alejandro Zendejas in the 64th minute, but both were repelled with spectacular saves by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.
The Foxes took the lead when Silva tried to deny a ball and left it to Barbosa, who controlled it with his chest and, without thinking, volleyed it in for an eye-catching goal.
América finished the game with 10 players after the expulsion of the Uruguayan Federico Viñas at 77 for a blow with the loot in the face of a rival, when both were lying on the grass.
When the game expired, Herrera made a powerful shot with his right foot that entered the left post of Ochoa.
Cruz azul returns to the old ways
Forward Rogelio Funes Mori and defender César Montes scored in stoppage time and Monterrey came from behind to draw 2-2 against Cruz Azul.
Uriel Antuna and Ecuadorian Brayan Angulo scored at 31 and 53 minutes to put the Machine ahead, but Funes Mori cut it at 91 and Montes declared equality at 96.
With the tie, Monterrey remains undefeated and with its five points it is placed in seventh position.
Cruz Azul now has seven units and is placed as provisional leader, but could give up that position if Pumas defeats Tigres this Sunday.
The Machine took the lead when Rodríguez sent a through pass to the right flank for Antuna, who entered the area, shook off a defender’s mark and converted a low shot to the right post of Argentine goalkeeper Esteban Andrada.
In the second half, the Colombian defender Jhon Estefan Medina committed a foul inside the area on the Uruguayan Ignacio Rivero and Angulo converted with a shot to the left side of Andrada, who launched himself correctly, but failed to deflect.
It seemed that the Machine was winning, but Funes Mori discounted with a left-footed shot that entered the right post by Jesús Corona and in the last breath, Montes received a center from the right and headed in the small area to put the 2 -two.
chivas spider draw
Striker Alexis Vega scored a great goal from a free kick and Chivas scratched a 1-1 draw at home against Querétaro, although he still does not shine in the Clausura tournament.
Argentine Leonardo Sequeira put the Gallos Blancos in front after just two minutes, but Vega leveled with his shot in the 43rd.
With the result, Guadalajara adds two games without winning and accumulates four points, to place itself in seventh position, pending the other results of the third date.
It is a slow start for the “Sacred Flock” that this tournament seeks to end a drought of titles that dates back to Clausura 2017.
“We don’t like to draw at home, we feel like we let two important points slip away,” said coach Marcelo Michel Leaño. “The way this tie tastes like something is beating Juarez and adding three.”
Querétaro added its second tie in the tournament and with its two units it is located in the eleventh step.
The visiting team took the lead when Chivas lost a ball in an attempt to play from their area. Sequeira fired a shot from outside the area that hit the right post of goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño.
Chivas equalized late in the first half, when Vega masterfully took a free kick just outside the area and hit the left post of Uruguayan goalkeeper Washington Aguerre.
At last the beast roars
With goals from Colombian Andrés Mosquera and Chilean Víctor Dávila, León got his first victory in the Clausura by beating Pachuca 2-1.
Mosquera scored the first goal of the game after two minutes, but his compatriot William Tesillo had an own goal in the 32nd minute to equalize and Dávila scored the winner in the 58th minute for Fiera, who lost in the final of the previous tournament.
The runner-up, who came from two draws, remains undefeated and accumulates a harvest of five points, with which he is placed in sixth position while waiting for the other results.
Pachuca lost the undefeated after two wins and remains with six units, provisionally in third place.
