The Chamber of Deputies Approves Project for Standardized Universal Charger for Electronic Devices

The Chamber of Deputies approved the project that seeks a standardized use of the charger for different types of electronic devices and passed to the Senate.

During the day of this Wednesday, the Chamber of Deputies approved the bill that seeks to establish the use of a standardized universal charger for different types of devices electronics and portable game consoles.

By 122 votes in favor, four against and eight abstentions, the project was approved and will go to the senate to continue processing. In this way, the room supported the norm that came with a positive report from the Commission for the Future and Sciences.

What is the project about?

The idea is that the universal charger is applicable standard to all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headsets, portable speakers and portable game consoles.

In this way, suppliers of electronic equipment must guarantee common interoperability between the equipment and its charging devicesso that in this way everyone adapts to a single charging port.

Regarding the technical specifications, the project maintains that the obligations will be defined in a regulation issued by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovationwhich must be carried out within a maximum period of 180 days, from the publication of the standard in the Official Gazette.

The initiative was proposed by UDI parliamentarians Sergio Bobadilla, Felipe Donoso, Henry Leal, Daniel Lilayu, Cristóbal Martínez and Flor Weisse.

“This is a project that we started promoting last year, when the use of a universal charger for all electronic devices was approved in the European Union. And we did it not only thinking of greater comfort for users, but also to contribute effectively to the care of the environmentbecause we are one of the Latin American countries that generates the most electronic waste in the year”, explained Deputy Martínez, one of the promoters.

Along these lines, he explained that said measure, in the case of cell phones, will begin to be implemented within two years from its publication, while the period for the rest of the electronic devices will be four years.
