The Ukrainian counter-offensive faces the most difficult tactical task imaginable – to overcome the stationary defenses the Russians have built, so don’t expect quick results. US Army Lieutenant General Douglas Luth spoke about this in an interview with Radio Liberty, UNIAN news agency reported.
From 2013 to 2017, he was the Permanent Representative of the United States to NATO. According to the American general, the US military would not launch such a military operation (like Ukraine) without air and artillery superiority, as well as sufficient demining capacity.
“Imagine successive minefields, obstacles, including physical obstacles such as ditches and tank traps, controlled and monitored direct fire lines and artillery systems supported by Russian attack helicopters,” Luth said. He emphasized that this is the most complex tactical task and the American army would hardly undertake it under such conditions as the Ukrainians are operating now.
“The US military would only do this if it had artillery superiority, which the Ukrainians do not have.” And if it has air superiority, that is, it controls the air over the combat space. The Ukrainians also do not have this advantage, so it is unrealistic to expect the Ukrainians to do something on the battlefield that the American units would not even try,” the American general emphasized.
In particular, he noted that the Ukrainians do not have sufficient demining capacity, and penetration through minefields is much slower than expected. “So I think there has to be a dose of realism here in terms of what the Ukrainians are trying to do and how quickly they can succeed,” the American general said.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue counteroffensive operations in at least three sectors of the front. Kiev has made it clear that it wants to liberate all territories occupied by the Russian invaders, including Crimea.
