The Challenging Route of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the UN General Assembly Session amidst Airspace Closure by Western Countries

The route of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to New York for the UN General Assembly session is extremely difficult in terms of time and distance due to the closure of airspace by Western countries. This was stated today, September 19, by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov.

“Due to the closure of their airspace by Western countries, the route is extremely difficult, both in terms of time and distance,” the diplomat told TASS.

Ryabkov clarified that Russia received permission from the United States in time for the foreign minister’s special aircraft to fly over.

“Washington continues to do its utmost to complicate the activities of Russian diplomacy at the UN, using the illegal sanctions imposed against Russia as leverage. Although this time, perhaps out of fear of our retaliatory measures, journalists from Lavrov’s pool managed to obtain visas before the departure of the entire delegation, and permission for the ministry’s special flight to fly over was granted on time,” said the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation.

In 2022, the minister’s plane traveled to the UN General Assembly session, flying over unfriendly countries along the northern route in about 12 hours.

The High-Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly opens in New York on September 19. It traditionally attracts heads of state, prime ministers, foreign ministers, and representatives of international organizations from all over the world. For the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, a high-level week is held without sanitary restrictions; participants are required to speak in person at all events; video messages are not allowed. The Russian delegation will be headed by Lavrov.

The head of Russian diplomacy plans to hold about 20 bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly session, as well as negotiations with representatives of international organizations, including the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
