The oldest electric train, which is still in service, was produced in the 66th year of the last century. So it has reached the age of 57. On the other hand, the oldest diesel train is seven years younger. But even the youngest train will soon be 30 years old.

Due to the sanctions, spare parts are no longer purchased from Russia and Belarus, while, for example, spare parts produced in China are recognized as invalid because they could not withstand the load.

“Currently, suppliers of spare parts are, for example, from such countries as Lithuania, Ukraine, Georgia, Austria, Germany, Italy. Unfortunately, we have to say that there are no prototypes in Europe, there are no prototypes of spare parts, but there are alternatives that suit us and, of course, that costs many times more than it was until now,” said Aija Babre, marketing manager of AS “Pasažieru vilciens”.

For this reason, the new trains, which are currently promised at the end of autumn, are being eagerly awaited, with no specific date being given yet. It was previously promised to replace diesels with battery trains in 2026, but now the responsible authorities no longer mention such a deadline.
