A new report highlights the challenges parents face in ensuring their children have adequate care while they work,
According to the Citizens Committee for Children, most families in the city cannot afford any type of child care due to their financial situation.
This is despite the fact that the years in which this care is needed are crucial for the development of minors, as well as for school preparation and future success.
Luis Alberto Xinol is a father who is not given 24 hours a day to fulfill his responsibilities and his salary is not adjusted either.
-Do we see that the race is going right now, leave one and leave the other?
“Of course, I have to leave one and then the other and then go to work because if not who supports the family,” Xinol said.
-How many hours a day do you work?
“12 hours”
And do you adjust your salary?
“It doesn’t adjust the salary.”
The data from the study are very revealing, among them they highlight that:
80% of families in the city cannot afford child care for children under five years old and almost 4 in 5 families cannot afford after-school care for children between 6 and 12 years old.
Additionally, families in The Bronx and Brooklyn have the highest economic burden paying more than half (63%) of their wages on child care.
Families with an infant and a preschool-aged child can spend almost half (43%) of their income on child care.
Katherine Morocho spends a large part of her budget on caring for her daughter.
“I have to pay for my other girl, so they charge me for the whole day, they don’t want to charge me for half the day,” said Morocho.
The organization calls on government leaders to take action to ensure sustainable funding for this service, as well as state and federal municipal resources to ensure universal access to child care services. They also ask not to make the 15% cut in city funds since this causes loss of services for children.
For some mothers these days, the burden is very heavy due to expenses and caring for their children.
-How many kids do you have?
“I have five.”
What would happen if I didn’t have this help? said Estefany Castillo.
“I would be struggling, the truth is I wouldn’t be able to work, I wouldn’t be able to take them to medical appointments.”
And the concern of parents is definitely safety but also a good education for their children.
