The Challenges Faced by Guards at Warung Madura in Jakarta

Jakarta

The hot afternoon in the Pamulang area, South Tangerang did not dampen Nawawi’s (25) enthusiasm for guarding Madurese Warung his own. Today is his turn to take care, after yesterday he was taken care of by his men.

Madura stalls, which operate 24 hours or are said to only close on ‘doomsday’ day, must be manned in shifts. Nawawi has experienced various twists and turns while he was a guard until he finally had his own shop since 2020, one of which was that 7 cellphones (HP) were stolen by thieves because they fell asleep.

“While guarding the shop, I lost 7 of my cellphones. I was also studying, while doing a side business, then it was time for my shift to look after the shop. At that time, I couldn’t stand the fatigue, I ended up falling asleep, so I lost my cellphone,” Nawawi told detikcomTuesday (12/9/2023).

Nawawi said that losing his cellphone had become a regular occurrence every time he opened a branch of Warung Madura, of which there are currently 4. However, this incident did not make him improve the security of the shop by installing CCTV.

“There was no CCTV, it disappeared when I just opened the shop, so it’s normal that when I open a new shop, it will disappear at night because I’m tired of tidying up the shop all day. Since then it’s been safe, it hasn’t disappeared again,” he said.

It doesn’t stop there, he often experiences being visited by thugs while guarding Warung Madura at the Pondok Petir branch. Not violently, every time an incident occurs, he deals with it calmly.

“Just face it and say ‘if there are palak-palakin like this, I have to report it to the RT because I have permission here for the residents too’, so I’m confused if he’s a thug. At least I’ll just give him what I can, I’ll give him cigarettes. If “I’ll definitely give you a ride here. So it’s nice now that my shop is guarded, it’s safer now,” he added.

Nawawi said that while guarding Warung Madura, neither he nor his subordinates had any special supplies to protect themselves. This is different from the story of the Warung Madura guard in Serang who was approached by punks and fought with a sharp sickle.

“I don’t have any in my shop. Thank God, it’s been safe for 3 years,” said Nawawi.

The keeper of Warung Madura in the Sawah Baru area, South Tangerang named Saifullah (26) also admitted that he had been approached by thugs who bought cigarettes and tried not to pay. Just like before, he chose to face the thugs without violence.

“We are still thinking about fighting them. We can fight them, but we think that we live in a country of law. In Madura we can play celurit, here we are still thinking twice because we are the children of immigrants,” said Saifullah.
