The Challenges and Complications of Developing for Xbox Series S

On the Internet, developers complain more loudly about Xbox Series S. A less powerful console complicates their work. She attributed the wrinkles to the Finnish studio Remedy while working on a horror event Alan Wake 2.

In a recent interview, head of communications Thomas Puha admitted to optimization problems. He previously confirmed that the game will only run at 30fps on the Xbox Series S, while there will be a performance mode on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. But he still didn’t confirm a stable 60 FPS.

Puha talks about problems openly he spoke in an episode of IGN’s Next-Gen Console Watch. He blamed everything graphics chip and lack of memory. For Alan Wake 2, it wasn’t enough to lower the resolution and turn off the demanding effects. They had to go deeper in Remedy, which is reflected in the overall visual aspect. Still, the game should look good on the Xbox Series S and run at 30 FPS. If one wants to enjoy a better spectacle, one must choose a more powerful gaming machine.

Of course, developers also have the problem of optimizing the game for individual computer builds. Here, however, Puha is sure that players on weaker computers do not have such expectations and know that the game will not look amazing on them. However, it is different on consoles and their users should have higher demands on quality.

The Xbox Series S also troubles Larian Studios in the case Baldur’s Gate 3. Because of him, the Xbox game had to be postponed and Microsoft had to back down a bit from its policies. In them, it says that the title must have the same content on Series S and Series X. But with Baldur’s Gate 3, split-screen cooperative play is a problem. This will eventually only be available on the Xbox Series X.

The Xbox Series S turns out to be an ever increasing obstacle. Some studios are trying to convince Microsoft to release the game only on the Xbox Series X. But the technological giant wants to hear nothing about it. We’re not surprised because he promised the same games for both consoles of the current generation. In addition, according to unofficial information, Series S is selling significantly better.

“I want to ensure that games are released on both platforms. That’s our job as a platform owner. We have committed to this together with our partners,” Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s gaming division, said earlier. Previously, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty admitted that developing for Series S alongside Series X, PS5 and PC means more work. He remains optimistic about the future, suggesting that developers will adapt better to hardware and development will be smoother. Specialists from Xbox will also help with this, each platform has one.

Alan Wake 2 will be released on 10/27 of this year.
