The Climate Emergency-Aragon Alliance and the Geoforo for A New Culture of the Earth organizes during the period February-May 2021 a cycle of roundtables-debate and conferences in relation to ‘The challenge of the climate crisis’.
Tables will take place the last Thursday of every month with the themes: Weather, Climate and Climate Change (February 25), Health Impacts (March 25), Impact of Food (April 22) and The Glasglow Summit (May 27).
The first talk on February 25 will address the difference between weather and climate, as well as indicators of climate change on a regional scale -Aragón and the Pyrenees- and locally – Zaragoza. They will talk about the importance of mountains in water resources and how climate change can affect snow and glaciers in mountains around us. Likewise, climate change will be approached from the perspective of the past, with examples of the climate record from the last thousands of years obtained from lakes or caves in Aragon.
In the second month, which will be held on March 25, it will address how climate change is already affecting the health of the population. One of the most important manifestations is the number of deaths associated with heat waves, but also those derived from the increase in atmospheric pollution or infectious diseases transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes or arthropods, as well as the impact of other extreme meteorological phenomena, such as floods, droughts, etc. The effects on the quality and quantity of water and the supply and composition of food, as well as climatic migrations, will also have repercussions on global health. The climate crisis is a public health problem and a health approach, which emphasizes the health co-benefits of climate action, can be a more effective narrative for individual and social change.
A new appointment, on April 22, will address our food model and its impact on climate change. The COP26 It is presented as a meeting of great importance because, among many other reasons, the commitments adopted by the majority of the signatory countries of the Paris Agreement on reducing their greenhouse gas emissions are now completely insufficient to reach levels of warming (below 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era) that scientists consider “safe”, to avoid major climatic catastrophes. This summit will be held under the skepticism of environmental authorities and the timid hope that the return of the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement entails.
