Dramatic elections will be held in Russia over the weekend, in which Vladimir Putin will be elected president again. Voting started on Friday and will continue until Sunday evening.

President of the European Council Charles Michel congratulated Putin in an ironic tone on the election victory already at the beginning of the first election day.

From the authorities’ point of view, the elections have not gone completely smoothly. By Saturday, various acts of damage had been reported from 29 polling stations. Eight arson attempts have been reported. There are said to be 214 destroyed ballots.

Formally, Putin’s counter-candidates are the chairman of the raunchy national LDPR party Leonid Slutskithe Communist Party Nikolai Kharitonov and Novye Ljudi party Vladislav Davanikov. In fact, the Kremlin has banned independent candidates from participating in the elections.
