The Central Bohemian Region will buy Hrabal’s cottage in Kersk for ten million

“Our intention is to build an exhibition in Kersko dedicated to Bohumil Hrabal, which will remind the writer and we want to emphasize the important context between the time in which Hrabal created and his books,” said Regional Councilor for Culture Vaclav Svenda (TOP 09), according to which it is about preserving the legacy of one of the most famous Czech writers.

The owners of the cottage were still neighbors who took care of the writers and to whom the childless couple Hrabal left the cottage. According to the region’s management, the house could be opened next year, and the mentioned exposition should be built here in the coming years.

The Hrabals bought the cottage in 1965 and came here from Prague for weekends, later after the death of his wife, Hrabal spent most of his time here. This is where many of his works were probably created, such as Postřižiny or I Served the King of England. Now the cottage is almost empty and according to the information sign, there are no objects related to the life of Bohumil Hrabal. In the end, 41 out of 52 representatives present voted for the purchase. The Ministry of Culture should also take part in creating the exhibition, which was promised by Minister Lubomír Zaorálek (ČSSD).
