Soviet censorship was careful to ensure that no obscenities leaked into the cinema. Even light, frivolous hints were mercilessly cut out of the paintings. This fate befell the movie hit “It was in Penkovo” with Vyacheslav Tikhonov and Maya Menglet. Initially, the picture contained vulgar phrases.
We are talking about a song about Saratov, which was turned on literally at the last moment. The text was written by Nikolai Dorizo, and the music by Kirill Molchanov. The verse at that time was considered blatant, because it contained dubious lines. The hero sings about the night grove and amazing acoustics in silence: “If you say the word “beloved” by the bush, your speech is heard throughout the neighborhood.”
The text was considered vulgar, and the creators of the picture had to remove the verse. Director Stanislav Rostotsky did not even try to defend the song in its original form, because the film itself was considered ambiguous and even immoral. Therefore, he did not need any extra problems. Today the picture looks more than chaste. However, during times of heavy censorship, the film was almost banned from showing.
