The collapse of the ceiling in the apartment in Jēkabpils on Thursday is related to the explosion, while the accident victim suffered extensive burns, follows from the information provided by Dace Kalniņa, a representative of the Zemgale Regional Office of the State Police (VP).
VP on Thursday before At 16.00, information was received that an explosion had taken place in an apartment building on Madonas Street in Jēkabpils. Officials of the Jēkabpils district immediately went to the scene and found out that six residents had evacuated from four apartments by their own forces.
On the second floor of the building, in an apartment where a gas explosion may have taken place, employees of the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) found a man who had suffered extensive thermal burns (approximately 70%) and was taken to a medical institution by a doctor.
Cars near the building were also damaged in the explosion. So far, the police have received four complaints about vehicle damage. Also, due to the collapse of the ceiling, floor and wall, the apartments are no longer habitable.
The police have initiated criminal proceedings under Chapter 18 of the Criminal Law for what happened. An investigation is underway to find out the circumstances of the accident.
In Jēkabpils municipality, LETA was informed that part of the building where the explosion took place is in a state of emergency. Already at the end of last year, a decision was made to provide another residence for the residents of 14 apartments, but not all residents have moved to other residences.
The explosion occurred in the part of the building that was declared uninhabitable.
The municipality is ready to help the victims of the accident with both accommodation and crisis benefits, but so far there has been no such request.

The search of the constructions started immediately, but one person was rescued from the second floor apartment by a staircase and handed over to the medics.
