Linden (srs). Three days after the resignation of the mayor of Linden, Jörg König (CDU), the first candidate to succeed emerged.
Fabian Wedemann, 32, wants to be mayor of Linden. The CDU city association will nominate him on Friday next week. Wedemann, who works for Sparkasse Gießen, has been the head of the Linden city council for two years. Since 2011 he has been a member of the city’s parliament for the CDU.
The Lindener CDU board agreed on Wedemann on Monday evening, hours after King’s resignation. The proposal was well received by members attending the CDU citizens’ association’s annual general meeting on Wednesday.
He appreciates the challenge, Wedemann explained about the current political situation in Linden after König’s resignation. If he were to be elected, Wedemann said, he wanted to bring the city parliament and the city administration closer together.
Talked about four years ago
It is about implementing the resolutions of the parliament and “using the potential of the city”, and also wants to dialogue with all parliamentary groups. Above all, König neglected communication, “you have to blame him for that”.
Wedemann was already under discussion as a candidate for the CDU in the last mayoral election four years ago. This was reported by the chairman of the Lindener CDU, Ralf Burckart. At the time, however, König had objected and announced that he would still run if Wedemann were a candidate. After all, the CDU supported König.
Wedemann explains that there were no concrete discussions about a candidacy with him in 2018. However, Burckart’s history indicates that there have been serious tensions between König and his own party for several years.
The mayoral election is on March 12. An exciting question in the upcoming election campaign will be how the people of Linden evaluate the role of the CDU in the dispute with their party friend König in recent months and how they evaluate the fact that the Christian Democrats supported the re-election of a town hall boss in 2018. which they now claim, ultimately denied any jurisdiction for the office.
This is definitely a mortgage, Burckart admits. However, he is confident about the mayoral election. Wedemann meanwhile explains that this is no burden. “It’s about choosing a person,” he says.
The banking graduate heads the corporate customer center at Sparkasse Giessen, is deputy sales manager in the corporate customer area. Wedemann grew up in Linden, his mother is from Leihgester, his father is from Grossen-Linden. He is active in various clubs in the city, in the fraternity “Einigkeit”, in the carnival club “Harmonien” and on the board of directors of TSV Grossen-Linden. He is also a member of the voluntary fire brigade Grossen-Linden and the fan club Eintracht EFC Ebbelwoi Adler Grossen-Linden.
In 2006, at the age of 16, he joined the Junge Union. In 2011 he came to the city parliament as a replacement for the CDU, and a year later he became a party member. Within the CDU citizen association, Wedemann has made himself “indispensable” in recent years, says chairman Burckart. Wedemann is well suited for the mayor’s office due to his many years of involvement in local politics and his professional experience as a manager at the Sparkasse.
There is currently no contact between König and the Lindener CDU, Burckart reported. Burckart contradicted rumors that the resigned mayor was still a party member and had not resigned.
In addition to the CDU, free voters could also support Wedemann’s appointment, the Lindener FW board discussed this yesterday evening. SPD, Greens and FDP will discuss and vote on possible candidates at the general assemblies on 28, 29 and 30 December. Applications must be received by the Returning Officer by 2 January. PHOTO: NALE
