The former professional ice hockey player Jimmy Hayes died in August, only 31 years old. Hayes’ death came just three months after he and his wife Kirsten became the parents of their son Mac.
The couple, who got married in 2019, already had a son, Beau (2).
The cause of Hayes’ death was long unknown, because it was not possible to determine what took the life of the 31-year-old. Among other things, a toxicology test was performed on Hayes, to see if he had toxins in his body.
The cause of death was finally clear on Friday last week. Now wife Kirsten and Hayes’ father Kevin confirm that the 31-year-old died of acute poisoning, as a result of taking the combination of fentanyl and cocaine.
–
– I was completely shocked, says his wife Kristen, according to Boston Globe, and continues:
– I was so sure that it had nothing to do with drugs. I really thought it was a heart attack or whatever but it… It did not make sense, so it was tough. I was hoping to get another answer when they called. I was hoping for clarity and I was shocked to hear that it was the. He never showed signs of deleting at home.
Hayes had been on painkillers up through a long hockey career and had recently been treated for the problem, but the family thought it was a chapter in the past. Fentanyl use suggests otherwise.
–
«Fentanyl is a strong-acting, synthetic opioid, which is used in pain treatment. Fentanyl is 75 to 100 times stronger than morphine, and has faster onset effects and side effects than morphine “, writes Large Norwegian encyclopedia.

Hayes was still an active hockey player, ran a podcast, was happily married and had two young children. He apparently lived a dream life, and none of those closest to him knew anything.
Now the wife and father want to focus on the case, to warn others in the same situation and perhaps prevent something similar from happening.
– I do not want him to be stigmatized as a “junkie”. Do you understand what I mean? Because he was not. Jimmy helped everyone, says father Kevin Hayes.
–
– I hope he can save some other lives by telling us about what happened to him. It’s great if this can save someone from that pain. It was a great American boy who made a terrible mistake and it cost him his life, he continues.
The father describes himself as an addict who has long been sober. He says that his son has become increasingly addicted to painkillers recently, and that he had warned him against it.
The late Jimmy Hayes had a seven-year career in the American hockey league NHL, and played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils, among others.
