The Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Toluca celebrated the solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the Cathedral of the capital of the state of Mexico. The day of San José is celebrated every March 19; However, this 2023 as it fell on a Lenten Sunday, the solemnity was changed to Monday, March 20.
The Archbishop of Toluca, Monsignor Raúl Gómez González, recalled that with this celebration the Catholic community of the ecclesiastical province received the jubilee plenary indulgence from Pope Francis.
“May Saint Joseph intercede for all of us who make up this portion of the Church, that we be docile to the call of Jesus and be sowers of values, of unity and communion, of peace and love of brothers.”
Toluca has San José as its patron saint and in his honor the celebration is held on March 19. During the solemn celebration, the head of the Archdiocese, Raúl Gómez González, called on the parishioners to show sensitivity and unity in order to live in peace, in the midst of the confrontation, discord and violence that is currently experienced in the world.
It is important to specify that, during the Lenten period, only two solemnities are celebrated: Saint Joseph and the Annunciation of the Lord.
The Archdiocese of Toluca explained that Saint Joseph had the privilege of being the husband of Mary, of raising the Son of God, and of being the head of the Holy Family. He is patron of the Universal Church, of many religious communities, institutions and countries, including that of the Mexican capital.
Saint Joseph is known as the “Saint of Silence” because no word pronounced by him is known; however, we do know his works, his faith and love, which influenced Jesus and his holy matrimony.
city history
History points to March 19, 1522 as the founding date of Toluca, by missionaries who evangelized the region, so this year the 501 years of the city are celebrated, which in the viceroyalty period received the name of Toluca de San José.
