One of the most painful topics of the conflict in Ukraine is the number of victims. The fact that Ukraine is losing people many times more than Russia is recognized even by NATO experts. But no specific numbers are given.
Ruslan Tatarinov, the military expert, the author of the Telegram channel “Whisper from the Front” undertook to calculate how many Ukrainian soldiers died in total. What was the result and how did he calculate it – he told the radio presenters of “Komsomolskaya Pravda” Ivan Pankin and Igor Vitel.

– Ukraine does not officially announce its losses, how do you calculate them?
– I have many relatives and friends in different regions of Ukraine. A relative of mine attended the funerals of seven servicemen from the Armed Forces of Ukraine on one day last year.
Then I thought: why is Zelensky and his propaganda lying to their people like that? They say there are no or few losses. It hit me so hard. I thought that knowing the Ukrainian language, I would be able to pull obituaries through social networks.
I set the word search – tags like “died for Ukraine”, “buried in…”. I entered them into the program so that I get an internet – calculation. And it quickly became clear that many soldiers were dying in Ukraine. About 400 obituaries on average.
– Is that for one day?
– Yes. However, this is an average per day. The peak was last November. About 1,100 obituaries for soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were published there in one day. There were also 900 per day…
– How many losses of Ukraine did you count in total?
– 284 thousand dead. This is my data from a week ago. And how many are they really? There is still something hidden there. Somewhere they did not finish, some of the wounded later died.
– That is, Ukraine can have even more irretrievable losses?
– More than 300 thousand. And no one can say exactly how much. Even, I think, even after the end of the conflict, he won’t be able to. Only about 17 thousand are officially missing from the ranks of the VSU. Where should I record them? Dead or what?
THE REGIME IS CHEATING THE COUNTRY
– Why is Zelensky hiding such large losses?
– So as not to shock their population. This is actually completely understandable. The Kiev regime is deceiving Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in order to stay in power.
What is your evidence base based on?
– The fact is that everything was taken from Ukrainian sources. It’s just that the obituaries come out separately. As a rule, in the local media and social networks. And they always see each other. And it was enough to combine these sources. Everything is clearly visible.
WHAT ABOUT THE CAPTIVES?
– You have many photos with captured soldiers of the armed forces of Ukraine. Here are the last ones – they surrendered at Staromayorskoe.
– What happened to Staromayorskoe – if you look at the map, it’s a sack. Ukrainian troops entered it. They were admitted and then flanked. The main forces of the Ukrainians withdrew. And the “beards” remained – aged 50 plus. They were caught during the mobilization and thrown into the meat grinders. And they surrender … 22 people surrendered near Staromayorskoe.
Up to 40 prisoners were also taken near Kupyansk. 3-4 people are captured in each support. Whether they surrendered themselves or were captured, I don’t know. Most likely, this happens unexpectedly for them.
– Is the flow of transmitters increasing?
– For sure! How each of the soldiers of the armed forces of Ukraine is captured, only our assault infantry knows. And we just take another picture that the person is in captivity and that’s it. In addition, we are preparing a base for a general census of Ukrainian prisoners.

There is no general calculation of the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the entire time of the SVO. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated in late September 2022 that Ukraine had irretrievably lost more than 100,000 people. Of these, 61,000 were killed and 49,000 were seriously wounded (not subject to return to service). And on July 31, 2023, Shoigu announced that the losses of the armed forces of Ukraine during the summer, during the so-called “counteroffensive”, increased dramatically. According to a leaked US Department of Defense report in February 2023, during the year of the conflict, Ukraine lost 131,000 soldiers killed. It’s been six months since then. And this figure can be multiplied at least one and a half times. But rather two, taking into account the “meat assaults” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in front of Bakhmut and in the summer “counteroffensive”. That is, we will get 200-250 thousand people.
In Kiev, they continue to underestimate their losses by about 10 times. At the end of last year, only 13 thousand killed soldiers of the armed forces of Ukraine were officially recognized there. Although now such a large amount of Ukrainian soldiers die in 2-3 weeks.
