From the outset, the new and successful Netflix series Who Killed Sara? he stages the mystery with a quote from Agatha Christie: “Very few of us are what we seem.” Tucked into a laid-back summer party scene, we see a group of teens drinking tequila and dancing to “Livin ‘la Vida Loca” on a boat in the sun, captured on a video camera from the early 2000s. One One of the teenage girls, Sara, puts on a life jacket and gets on a parasailing boat. He launches himself, yelling “I love you!” as it flies above the water.
This is how they do it: Who Killed Sara? he disarms his audience, suspends us at a time when everything seems pleasantly perfect and full of possibilities, only to make us stagger along with the characters when we see that close-up of the frayed parachute straps. Sara’s brother Alex begs his friend Rodolfo to stop the boat when he sees Sara in distress. Rodolfo accelerates and we watch Sara dive into the depths in slow motion. All this to say that this is not your typical murder case.
