The Case of the British Nurse: The Infant Butcher Found Guilty of Killing 7 Newborns

The media has been buzzing over the past few days with talk about the case of the British nurse, “the infant butcher”, who was convicted of killing 7 newborn babies and attempting to kill 6 others, in the worst case of mass killing of infants in the country’s history.

The killer nurse faces a life sentence, as the verdict will be pronounced on Monday.

According to the British newspaper “The Sun”, Lucy Letby refuses to come to court to hear the verdict, which angered the families of the victims.

According to the newspaper, these families described Letby as “cowardly”, and stressed that they should be forced to hear how their lives were ruined.

One parent told the Daily Mail: “She is a coward. We feel betrayed that she will not be there to hear exactly how her horrible actions have affected our children and our lives. The judge should force her to come to confront all the victims. It is unfair and a slap in the face for all of us.”

Former Justice Minister Robert Buckland said: “The statements of the families of their victims should be taken to Letby’s cell if they refuse to appear.”

He added, “My suggestion is to make sure there is a live feed link broadcast to the nurse’s cell.”

Last week, the judge in charge of the case said the court had no authority to compel a child killer to stand trial.

Letby, 33, was found guilty of the “continuous and calculated cold-blooded” murders of infants and premature infants, within the unit where she worked at a hospital in the North West of England, between 2015 and 2016.

Prosecutors told the jury that the nurse “poisoned some of her infant victims by injecting them with insulin, others by injecting air, or by forcibly putting milk in their mouths, and she attacked some of her victims several times before they died.”

According to the British newspaper “The Guardian”, among the victims were identical twins who were killed within 24 hours, an infant weighing less than one kilogram who was injected with air, and a girl who was born ten weeks premature.

Lucy, who was in her mid-20s when the attacks were carried out, is expected to become the third surviving woman in the UK to be sentenced to life in prison.
