The 2023 edition of the Fête du Lac, which will take place on Saturday, is an event awaited by many in Annecy and more generally in the region. But at a time when the environment is at the heart of concerns, what about the carbon footprint and ecological consideration during the Fête du Lac?
In 2022, the first carbon footprint
Following the 2022 edition of the Fête du Lac, a very first carbon assessment was carried out. A point which had been included in the specifications of the event and which had to be carried out by the service provider.
In particular, this assessment showed that the carbon footprint of the Fête du Lac amounted to 6.73 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. If this may not speak to you, consider that this represents 4 round trips between Paris and New York, distributed as follows:
67.41% for the transport of goods 19.47% for fireworks 13.22% for electricity relating to the show
Towards a reduction of the carbon footprint
Obviously, the objective of the City of Annecy and the organizers is to gradually reduce this carbon footprint. Thus, 80% of the products come from local service providers. Ignition systems without squibs are now used, while the aluminum present in place for the cover of the mortars on the pontoons has been removed.
During the Lake Festival, a digital control now allows to reduce the pyrotechnic delays. A way to reduce the surface to be protected from the weather on the launching mortars relating to firework bombs.
Actions in favor of the environment
In order to make the Fête du Lac more ecological, various actions have been implemented. Until now, for example, single shot and Roman candles in calibers 30, 45, 50 and 60 were covered by plastic caps.
It is now over. These caps have been replaced by non-flammable and waterproof films, totally natural and biodegradable. A novelty made from corn.
On the other hand, trials are underway to manufacture other rigid components, still made from corn and with the aim of replacing plastic. To do this, the plants are mixed and ground with natural plasticizers such as water or starch. The idea being to have plastics with a limited lifespan, but also more rigid.
Propose compositions that are more respectful of the environment
Always with the aim of making the Fête du Lac more respectful of the environment, new components are used to make the fireworks. For example, bomb shells are made from cardboard made from rice glue and fish waste. Other products under investigation include:
Vegetable charcoal Gum arabic Acaroid gum Dextrins Sugar
