The car terminals in the ports are packed: “No ability to bring them to the final consumer”

“Our parking lots are really completely full”, says Marc Adriansens. “Every seat is occupied because there are problems with transport. There is not enough capacity left. Due to the crown crisis, a lot of capacity has been reduced and many truckers have left for other sectors. There is also insufficient capacity for trains, priority is given to energy trains. We estimate that there is currently a third capacity shortage. “

Adriansens talks about a cocktail of causes. “There was the crown crisis. Then we had the computer chip problems and now the war in Ukraine.” The result: overcrowded ports. Some ships have to wait or divert to other ports. “We have lost ships in Le Havre, Bristol, Vlissingen or Rotterdam. But even there, everything is filled up. In the end, some factories have even closed down,” says Marc Adriansens.

The CEO of International Car Operators does not immediately see an improvement in the situation. “I foresee that we will have problems for the rest of the year. And then Chinese cars will come too. So I think we will still have full terminals next year.”
