The car brand from the Soviet Union revives Russia again, this is how it looks now

Jakarta

Car brand in the Soviet Union era Moskvich is revived in Russia. Now the car is being produced at the plant that used to be owned by Renault. The Moscow Moskvich Automobile Plant, operated by Kamaz, is expected to produce 600 cars by the end of 2022, of which 200 will be electric cars.

Moskvich cars of the new era can be bought in December. As for the design, Kamaz is said to be collaborating with China and will definitely be very different from the original Moskvich brand.

Kamaz in its official statement said that in 2023-2024 Moskvich will be assembled with a Semi-Completely Knock Down (SKD) system to increase the local content in the car. For the first model, it is stated that Kamaz will be more modern, comfortable, built with high quality and equipped with various safety features.

“Kamaz has experience in dealing with anti-crisis management, such as assembling SKD vehicles to boost local content,” Kamaz PJSC General Director Sergey Kogogin said in his official statement.

“Moreover, thanks to the high school of design and mechanics established in recent years, where the company is one of the leaders in the development and production of commercial vehicles, electric vehicles and innovative products will contribute to the revival of Moskvich. We are pleased that the development of Kamaz was able to contribute to the development of the Russian automotive industry amid the global trend of advanced and environmentally friendly vehicles,” said Kamaz.

As a flashback, the plan to revive this Soviet car brand emerged from Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. In May 2022, Sobynanin decided to restart production at the Moskvich plant. In July, Kamaz PJSC and the Moscow government signed a joint venture for the development of passenger cars and the production of domestic electric cars.

This development is expected to last for the next eight years in three main phases. The restart of production activities with the help of Kamaz is included in the plan as a first step. Then these activities will continue by accelerating the supply chain, as well as assembling SKD Moskvich 3 cars and electric cars.

Continuing in 2024, together with the SKD process, the level of local auto content will be increased with supplies from local Russian companies. Then, in the third phase, Moskvich will launch a Russian electric car with local components.
