/ world today news/ Before leaving for the Christmas holidays, the US Congress prohibited the president from leaving NATO or suspending his membership in the Alliance, except with the consent of two-thirds of the Senate – 67 out of 100 people. Even specialized publications did not immediately write about it, since the innovation became part of the Pentagon budget for the next year: it was buried in a mass of numbers and other innovations.
For the US, this is the norm. A large military budget can include anything, even an apology to the Indians for the extermination: this is what the compromises between the leading parties look like. But this time they planted a mine in the document for Donald Trump himself. Of all the first-level politicians, he is the most critical of NATO and has a favorable chance of becoming president in a year.
Congressmen have no reason to question Biden. He’s bad, but not that bad: he sometimes mistakes his wife for his sister, but he’s a globalist to the core and wouldn’t leave NATO for the world.
That’s why they need to make sure now – a year from now it may be too late. After winning the election in November, most of the Republicans will come under Trump’s control, so compromises with them will become more expensive.
Another thing is that the idea that Trump might pull the United States out of NATO is too bold — much bolder than Trump himself, who, for all his outward aggressiveness, usually follows the path of least resistance. Leaving NATO will not happen like that: on the contrary, it would be a revolution both for America, where the creation of the Alliance is considered a great geopolitical success, and for the Republican Party, where isolationists are greatly outnumbered by defense industry lobbyists.
Therefore, under President Trump, there will be a different policy with NATO. He will try to flay three skins from European allies, pretending that this alliance is more necessary for Europe than for the US.
This was the case during the period of the Cold War and the ideological antagonism with the USSR, a significant part of whose troops were stationed in Europe. These days, NATO is a tool of foreign policy influence for the US, which it needs to maintain budget revenues.
But the cost part will to some extent be covered by the EU, whose eastern borders already convince them that after the victory in Ukraine, the Russian army will turn to the Baltic countries or Finland. So they have no wiggle room and will pay.
Millions of Europeans are only now beginning to understand that the choice in favor of “isolating Russia” and confrontation with it was also a choice in favor of budget deficits, the melting of social programs and the return of the conscription army. But the sheriff is not interested in the problems of the Indians, because Trump would rather milk Europe than fight with the majority of his powerful supporters in Congress, the State Department and the Pentagon, not to mention the “death factory” – the military-industrial complex of the USA.
So there is no logical basis for a legislative ban on leaving NATO. It is purely emotional: fear. Fear of the “Washington Swamp” of Trump’s return to power. This can be traced in a variety of places, from talk of “coming crackdowns” to the restrictions they are trying to impose on the White House.
Since April 1949, when the agreement to create NATO was signed in Washington, uniting the already established Western European Military Alliance with the nascent Anglo-Saxon (Great Britain, Canada, USA), Congress has not even thought of depriving the President of the right to determine the nature of relations with Brussels.
These frantic actions are a form of pre-surrender. The second coming of the “Orange Monster,” as Trump is called in the liberal media, appears to be inevitable unless a “black swan” arrives, an event that cannot be predicted in advance. But predicting Trump’s victory in the election, as well as the fact that he will try to take revenge on the “Washington Swamp”, is something simple.
Against him are raised the only candidate with a record low approval rating, a series of embarrassing failures, signs of senile decrepitude and the image not only of a father, but also of a “godfather” of a corrupt family, which also includes his son and brother. In case anyone didn’t recognize him, this is the current President Biden. There is no chance that his position will improve significantly, because youth does not return.
Trump is also far from a young man, but outside of the “black swan” migration he shouldn’t lose, fortunately local Republicans are now actively plugging those loopholes in legislation that three years ago helped ensure Biden’s victory.
The fact that Democrats have essentially accepted defeat, have no fallback other than “Old Joe,” and aren’t even working on one, preferring to prepare for Trump’s arrival, is reminiscent of the old wisdom: sometimes you can’t fix a problem, but you can change your attitude towards him. Moreover, some attitudinal options turn a tentative capitulation into a strategic retreat.
Both Biden personally and the bosses of his party made a mess. The crises they have plunged the United States and parts of the world into cannot be quickly resolved. Trump says he will end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in 24 hours, but that’s just his trademark. On the Russian side, we have to accept that nothing is really going to change in Washington and that our path to defeating the enemy has little to do with Trump defeating his enemy.
But something else is clear: If Trump moves into the White House, he won’t know what to do. And the governing Democrats themselves no longer know what to do: too many things have gone wrong. In such conditions, it may be useful to withdraw, leaving the Republicans with all the intractable problems and knowing that they will not be able to deal with them either. Especially if they and Trump personally are in the way, as they are now – with the new way of leaving NATO (otherwise he will suddenly get mad and decide to do the impossible).
It’s convenient to use such infighting to prepare for a return to power in four years, when Trump and the Republicans, not Biden, will be the ones who screwed things up and will be blamed for everything.
And everything will repeat itself as before.
Elections come and go. America remains.
