The Capital of Thailand Is No Longer Bangkok, What Will It Change?

Jakarta

Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand which has historical importance in the Southeast Asian region. The city of Bangkok witnessed the formation of a cooperative organization of countries in Southeast Asia.

The organization is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was born on August 8, 1967. ASEAN was founded by 5 countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

During the meeting in Bangkok, the name of the capital city of Thailand was used as the name of the declaration which contained the purpose of establishing ASEAN. This declaration is known as the “Bangkok Declaration”.

Thailand’s Capital Changes Name

Although it has a lot of long history, now the name Bangkok is no longer used as the name of the capital city of Thailand.

Thai authorities announce name change for mother Bangkok city. The Office of the Royal Society of Thailand (ORST) announced that Bangkok will have an official name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

The name Krung Thep Maha Nakhon has not yet applied

The new name Krung Thep Maha Nakhon which has been announced will not be effective yet. This is because all the proposed draft laws (RUUs) have not been examined by the commission in charge.

In addition, the Thai government cabinet has also asked the panel to consider additional observations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Cabinet on Tuesday (15/2) local time approved a draft announcement by the Prime Minister’s Office regarding the renewal of the names of countries, territories, administrative zones and capital cities, as proposed by ORST.

In the announcement, the ORST committee also updated the designations of countries, regions, administrative zones, and capital cities to suit the current situation.

The panel also then submits the list to the Prime Minister’s Office for release of announcements.

The draft announcement revokes the Prime Minister’s Office announcement on names of countries, territories, administrative zones, and capitals dated November 9, 2001, using the ORST announcement on the renewal of names on September 1, 2021.

Bangkok Name Still Recognized

Later, if the new name has been effectively used, the name Bangkok will still be recognized and written in brackets for the future, as reported by the Bangkok Post, Wednesday (16/2/2022).

Previously, Bangkok itself has been used officially since November 2001 under the ORST announcement.

The word comes from the old territory Bangkokwhich are now part of the capital’s large metropolitan area, namely the Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai districts.
