The Capacity of the Seasonal Influenza Vaccine to Prevent Serious Cases and Deaths: Recommendations for the 2023-2024 Winter Season

The capacity to avoid serious cases and deaths is high, indicates the agency

The Health Secretariat of the Government of the State of Colima recommended that the population apply the vaccine against seasonal influenza as close as possible to the start of the vaccination campaign for the 2023-2024 Winter Season, which began on October 16, regardless of the date. application of the previous season’s dose; The capacity of this vaccine to prevent serious cases and deaths is high, which is why it is focused on population groups that are at greater risk of presenting complications from this viral disease.

These groups are children from 6 to 59 months of age, adults from 60 years of age and older, pregnant women, health personnel and the population from 5 to 59 years of age who live with comorbidities such as morbid obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes, as well as people with HIV and patients on treatments that cause temporary or permanent immunosuppression.

He stressed that the clinical evolution of the disease is mild in most people, recovering in one or two weeks without the need for medical assistance; However, serious manifestations are common in this population group.

Also for this 2023-2024 winter season, evidence documents that simultaneous vaccination with vaccines against Covid-19 and seasonal influenza available in Mexico is safe and does not reduce the immunogenicity (ability to generate immune responses) or the safety of both.

Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by a virus with ribonucleic acid (RNA) and it is known that three viral types (A, B and C) mainly affect people, presenting a pattern of higher seasonal incidence in winter and a preference through the upper respiratory tract, from the anterior nasal passages to the larynx, although in severe cases it can affect the lower respiratory tract: trachea, bronchi and lungs.

In the 2022-2023 winter season in Mexico, 9,877 positive cases of influenza were confirmed and in our state, until last September, 197 cases were recorded from 2,580 samples taken.
