The Cap Cotentin transport network and its customers victims of fraud

The Cap Cotentin transport network and its customers have been victims, for several weeks, of frauds stealing their identity via them social networks. Through pages, Facebook et Instagramentitled “Public transport map in Cherbourg” and attractive commercial offers, the people behind these malicious acts propose, by obtaining a subscription from the city of Cherbourg, to “take advantage of the transports Cap Cotentin free for six months”.

Too good to be true? Indeed, since the Cotentin transport network, operated by Transdev Normandie, has never offered this type of offer. “We feel a little helpless in the face of this,” laments Yannick Le Pajolec, director of Transdev Cotentin.

These scams often come from foreign countries and it is difficult to trace the source.

“Several dozen customers scammed”

By creating these Facebook and Instagram pages which can be misleading – even using a very beautiful image of the port of Cherbourg – cybercriminals use a fairly simple process: survey proposal, draw…Then comes the fateful moment when the bank details are requested. “You are taken through a tunnel that leads straight to the phishing. »

The first identification dates back to July 8, 2024, with “several dozen customers scammed” since then.

No complaint has been filed by Transdev Cotentin so far. “I will contact the group director to consider it. This may help with the investigations,” says Yannick Le Pajolec. Cap Cotentin recently published a message on its official social networks prevention message. “You should always be careful and go to our site (www.capcotentin.fr, Editor’s note). If in doubt, it is also possible to contact us.

For several months, several transport networks have been faced with this type of fraud, such as in Reims in the spring, or in Rouen.
