The Cannes International Film Festival / Article begins

The annual international film festival starts today in Cannes, France. 24 films will compete for the main prize – “Golden Palm Branch”.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival has received increased attention as it is the first major event of its kind since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to restrictions, this did not happen last year, and other film-related activities were canceled or part-time.

Festival director Trier Fremo reminds that the pandemic is not over and all those interested in Cannes must follow preventive measures, including wearing face masks. However, viewers will be able to watch movies and not miss the star march on the red carpet. The festival will run until July 17, and the event will be opened with the latest film “Annette” by French director Leo Caraks.

The jury will be chaired this year by the innovative US film director Spike Lee, and “Palma Branch” will be awarded to Jody Foster for his career achievements.

Latvia also this year actively participates at various festival industry events, programs and the film market.
