the Cannes Film Festival continues to “study the situation”

The Cannes Film Festival claims to have made no decision regarding a possible cancellation of its next edition in May due to the coronavirus epidemic and continues to “study the evolution of the situation with attention and lucidity”.

Reacting to an article in Le Point which writes that “the Cannes Film Festival will not take place”, the organization assures in a statement to AFP that “despite certain sensational titles there is nothing new concerning” the festival.

“The event to be held from May 12 to 23 is studying with attention and lucidity the evolution of the national and international situation in consultation with the City of Cannes and the CNC”, National Center for Cinema and the Animated Image. “They will take together, when the time comes, around mid-April, the necessary decision”, concludes the text.

Many events planned in the world of sport, entertainment and culture are canceled every day, with the first ban on gatherings of more than 5,000 people, reduced to 1,000 then 100 people and finally Saturday evening at all places receiving non-essential audiences, while states close their borders to certain travelers.

The Cannes Film Festival, with the International Film Market held at the same time, brings together tens of thousands of professionals, journalists and visitors from around the world each year. For his 73rd edition, he appointed the American filmmaker Spike Lee as president of the jury. The list of films competing for the Palme d’Or should theoretically be revealed at a press conference on April 16.

In Cannes, several flagship trade fairs have already been postponed, such as Mipim for real estate or the 3rd edition of the Cannes Séries festival.
