The Cannes Festival ignores Spanish cinema in its reopening edition, postponed to July

Cannes 2020 could not be, the pandemic was hitting France – and the whole world – but the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, although delayed from May to July, was officially launched this morning with the presentation of the official section by Thierry Fremaux, his art director. He thanked the filmmakers who volunteered to be part of the 2020 selection for their good disposition amid the chaos … and those who have decided to wait for the 2021 edition for their patience to be part of the best festival in the world.

An exhibition that is held, according to Fremaux, “strangely in July but firmly in July”, which, as had been announced, will open with the musical ‘Annette’, by Leos Carax, and which for yet another year has not featured Spanish cinema. .. neither in the official section nor in the parallel ‘A certain look’. The already traditional weak relationship between Cannes and our cinematography is joined this year by the scarcity of pandemic production, and that authors who do have a close relationship with the Croisette -such as Pedro Almodóvar or Jaime Rosales- have just finished filming their new tapes.

Cannes 2021 takes refuge, therefore, in the great European authors -mainly men- in an official section that will feature Wes Anderson [a él lo veremos en el festival porque rodará su nueva cinta en España este verano], but in which directors of another profile – European and veteran – abound, such as Jacques Audiard, Nanni Moretti or Asghar Farhadi. This year the official section is also forgetting about Latin American cinema, which will be present in ‘A certain look’ thanks to Tatiana Huezo and her film ‘Noche de fuego’.
