In the match of subgroup A, the Canadians beat the Austrians with a score of 11:0 (3:0, 4:0, 4:0).
The leading scorer among the winners was forward Connor Bedard, the potential number one pick in next year’s National Hockey League (NHL) draft, who had two goals and four assists. Four more points (1+3) were collected by Logan Stankovens, while 18 hockey players have scored at least one productive point in the Canadian national team.
With 14 points (6+8) accumulated in three games, Bedard is the most productive player in the tournament, the Canadians take the top four places among the most productive hockey players in the world championship.
The Austrians lost 0:11 to Sweden in the opening match of the tournament, but lost to the Czech Republic 0:9 in the second match. Austria’s U-20 national team is the only team that hasn’t scored a goal in the 2023 World Cup. Austria have scored 31 goals in three matches, but none of the other participating teams have scored more than 12 goals.
Meanwhile, in the match of group B, the USA defeated hockey players from Switzerland with a score of 5:1 (1:0, 3:1, 1:0).
Jimmy Snagerad scored twice for the United States, while Luke Hughes, Logan Cooley and Tyler Boucher also scored once. Switzerland’s only goal was scored by Atilo Biaska.
Sweden lead subgroup A of the World Cup with eight points from three games, followed by the Czech Republic on seven points, while the Canadians have six points and are in third place. Germany and Austria, who played two and three matches respectively, did not score any points and share fourth and fifth positions.
In subgroup B, however, Finland is in first place, having won seven points in three games, USA hockey players are in second place with six points and Switzerland, which has four points, completes the top three. Slovakia are in fourth place, having taken three points from two games, while Latvia are fifth with one point.
The best four of the five teams in the group progress to the quarter-finals, while the fifth-placed teams fight to stay in the strongest division, from which the weakest team will be eliminated.
Initially, the organization of the year-end championship was entrusted to the Russian city of Novosibirsk, but after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this right was taken away and the organization of the championship was entrusted to Canada for the third time of line. The previous two championships were held in Edmonton.
The World Under 20 Elite Championship will take place from December 26 to January 5 in the Canadian cities of Halifax and Moncton.
