Today, the Canadian Armed Forces are celebrating their fifth dayTenth Anniversary of the enhanced presence of the NATO Multinational Battle Group in Latvia.
Following Russia’s invasion of Crimea, NATO allies agreed at the 2016 summit in Warsaw to establish an enhanced front-line presence (eFP) to strengthen deterrence.
As the main country of eFP in Latvia, Canada is responsible for leading and coordinating with Latvia the multinational battle group of ten countries, which includes Albania, Canada, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. and participating countries to help set the course, pace and vision of this battle group.
The eFP Battlegroup operates within the Latvian Armed Forces Infantry Brigade, conducts joint exercises to be able to respond effectively to any attack, and remains a concrete reminder that an attack on one NATO member state is an attack on all member states.
In March 2022, Canada also announced its intention to renew its reinsurance obligations for several years.
During a recent visit to Brussels, Defense Minister Anita Anand joined other eFP staff members, as well as Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks, to mark the anniversary of the battle group as part of a larger collective strengthening of NATO. Protection for generations.
