A small group of farmers could solve the entire nitrogen problem. At least that is how it appears from new calculations by investigative journalism platform Investico for De Groene Amsterdammer and Trouw, among others.
Some cattle farms alone poison nature areas with more nitrogen than we collectively save in a year by driving 100 km per hour. This is a list of 25 companies that cause relatively the most damage. These companies are often large and / or located close to a vulnerable nature area.
The cabinet recognizes that there are peak loads, but does not want to impose obligations on those companies; it hopes for a voluntary application for a buy-back scheme. But does such a voluntary application work? Or would the cabinet do everything in its power to ensure that these companies stop emitting nitrogen.
