The burnt-out freighter Fremantle Highway is towed to Eemshaven. This was decided after consultation with all parties involved. The car transport ship caught fire above Ameland a week ago and is now waiting about 16 kilometers above Schiermonnikoog until it can be towed to a port.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, Eemshaven is the most suitable port because of the short distance (64 km), deteriorating weather conditions, the existing infrastructure and the facilities that the port offers for the next steps in the salvage of the ship. By keeping the towage journey as short as possible, the risks are limited.

The exact departure and arrival time of the ship is highly dependent on weather, current and tide. Earlier it had already become known that the ship had already been registered in the port schedule of the Eemshaven. According to the departure and arrival schedule of Groningen Seaports, which includes the port, the burnt-out cargo ship will arrive in the port at 13:00.

Stable

The situation on board the cargo ship is still stable, Rijkswaterstaat reports. Most of the ship has now been inspected and there are no indications that there is still a fire.

Experts continuously monitor the status of the ship during the tug trip. The Fremantle Highway is accompanied on its journey by the Coastguard’s emergency aid tug Guardian and Rijkswaterstaat’s oil recovery vessel Arca.

Yesterday, dredger and maritime service provider Boskalis also announced that the Fremantle Highway can be safely towed to Eemshaven.
